The Mobile NoteTaker's electronic pen looks like a regular black (both casing and ink color) medium wide ball point pen with a cap that has a clip on it. The only distinguishing thing about the pen, is the ball point end has a special sensor and the other end of the pen screws off, revealing a battery compartment. The pen uses 3 SR41 batteries.

Installation:

The included CD contains all the software and drivers needed. The Quick Start Guide gives instructions on installing them. It also provides instructions on the physical setups of the memory unit and electronic pen. The Mobile NoteTaker uses an updated version of the same software that was provided with the PC Notes Taker.

Usage:

The memory unit of the Mobile NoteTaker turns on by pressing and holding the power button for about 2 seconds. The very first time the unit turns on, you are prompted to enter the date and time. Afterwards, the LCD displays the main menu where the top 4 out of 5 items are shown. The five items in the menu are: Capture, Browse, Settings, Status, and About. Navigation through the menu can be accomplished with the physical buttons to the right of the screen or with the virtual buttons below the screen in conjunction with the electronic pen. The bottom line of the LCD displays the function of the corresponding virtual button below it. In the bottom left corner of the screen is a battery meter.

Just like the PC Notes Taker, the Mobile NoteTaker can work with any paper. Simply clip the memory unit to the top of a notepad, turn it on, and start writing. To have the memory unit start recording, it needs to be in capture mode. This can be done by selecting Capture in the main menu or simply start writing with the electronic pen. As you write, the LCD will render your every stroke. The screen will automatically scroll in all directions accordingly.

By default, the images on the screen are only 50% compared to what is on paper. Pushing the up navigation button will make the screen show 100% size. Pushing the down navigation button will make it show 50%. Pushing the down button one more time will make the screen show 25%. Of course, there are advantages for each of the three zoom levels.

With the ability to work away from the computer, the Mobile NoteTaker is a serious contender against similar products or a scanner and a pad of paper. In addition, with the ability to work with any paper as well as having a screen to review previously saved notes, the Mobile NoteTaker has the advantage over its competitions.

  • Works with any paper
  • Simple to use
  • LCD screen
  • Inexpensive to use
  • Can be used to fill forms and output as text
